What Caught My Eye: The Gold Line

The Ateneo Glee Club had the opportunity to visit Munich Germany and on our tour of the historic city we encountered the Gold Line.

Munich was where the Nazi Party began. Thus so many places held special historic significance due to their links to Hitler, the Third Reich, the Nazi Party and all the horrors connected to that time. The gold line very near Residenzestrasse. In the time of Hitler, a place was placed there in memory of 16 Nazis who died during a failed march to Berlin attempt. Hitler passed a law requiring all who passed there to give the Nazi salute at that spot. Behind the structure was a small alley (this is where the gold line is.) Non-supporter’s would avoid passing where they had to do the salute by going through the alley. The Nazi guards eventually figured this out. Pretty soon, those who passed in the alley were killed on the assumption that they were non-Nazi supporters. The gold line is there in memory of those who had died.

While the horrors of the Third Reich are still taboo discussion. It amazes me that they have these monuments, it speaks of a society that is in the process of evolving, maturing and becoming wiser.
